01/27/2004: watching cartoons...

I finally managed to get my hand on a copy of Duck Dodgers: The Green Loontern and it was great. Lots of squeeing on my part, and I bet it's even funnier for people more familiar with GL. I think my favorite scene was Daffy Duck trying to piece together the oath: "In blackest day or brightest night... watermelon, cantaloupe... yadda, yadda... superstitious, and cowardly lot... with liberty and justice for all." The scene where he talks about being the first of his species to achieve flight with that flock of ducks in the background was great too. In general Green Lantern ring powers work well with the Daffy Duck kind of cartoon figure, and really among the others in the Green Lantern Corps Daffy really doesn't even look out of place.

I also watched the newest Teen Titans episode, 2x03 Terra, because I was curious how they'd adapt the rather adult storyline of the Judas Contract for a kids' cartoon when TPTB said that giving the heroes double identities was already too complicated.

(spoilers for 2x03 Terra, also mentioning of titles of future Titans episodes)

This episode mostly established Terra as a character, and IMO she comes across as more sympathetic than in the Judas Contract, though it could be that initially in the comics she was more likable too. Still the cartoon Terra is fairly unstable like her comic counterpart. This Terra isn't on Slade's side yet, though he tries to make a connection to her. I think it's a good choice that they go slowly, and first establish her, though I was surprised to find that they didn't just do a double episode, but apparently intend to pick this thread up later and go for a real story arc through the season, if the title of 2x10 "Betrayal" is any indication.

I thought that they included Beast Boy's infatuation with Terra from the comics was cute, and I was surprised that they included visual references too, though in slightly different context. For example when Beast Boy is buried under the rocks he transforms into a gorilla, that is like in the climatic battle in Judas Contract, where he's also buried by Terra and comes out of it in gorilla form.
