11/13/2003: this week's Enterprise

I was kind of underwhelmed...

...spoilers for 3x09 North Star

I didn't think the episode was bad, my reaction was more "Eh, whatever." The plot was very typical Trek, and rather predictable, so it didn't really manage to hold my full attention, and the Skagarans (sp?) remained very generic, too. And there wasn't any subplot about one of the crew either, or really anything interesting happening besides the main thing with the Skagarans and how the situation on the planet got like it was -- not anything that I remember anyway. (I admit that I checked my email while the episode was playing in another window, so I might have missed very brief and subtle subplots.) There could have been more going on. They seemed to rely solely on the setup, that the "Hey, it's a Western in space! why is it like a Western?" would hold the audience's interest, but frankly if I want sci-fi mixed with Western I'd rather rewatch Firefly episodes, and I kept thinking "didn't Trek do the Western thing already?" though that's more a vague feeling of familiarity at seeing Star Trek people in Western settings than me remembering distinct episodes with that setting.
