01/29/2003: a few words on Angel 4x10 Awakening

There are serious spoilers for the episode ahead...

From the moment the soul removal ritual at first seemingly failed, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. At first I thought that it might be an elaborate plan of the beast, i.e. that the removal had worked, and Angelus was playing Angel as a deception, but after a while it became clear that this couldn't be the explanation. Still the more the episode turned towards the happy ending, the more sceptical I became. Especially the "happy family moment" at the end, with all being okay with each other again suddenly, was very much like a fantasy. It reminded me of Angels thoughts while he was underwater, the Thanksgiving fantasy, IIRC. So I wasn't entirely surprised that the whole scenario turned out to have been an elaborate suggestion to simulate the "perfect happiness" in a way Angel would believe, and remove the soul with that. And I really liked the earlier scene, with Cordelia and Angel, where she slips and says that Angelus is more intelligent than Angel. So very true. Or at least more cunning. I'm curious how the Angelus thing will turn out. I hope it'll provide a break from the relationship moping between Angel, Cordy, and Connor.
